Trades in the guide
Town guides cover the trades most homeowners call first: heating and cooling, plumbing, electrical and roofing. They also include related trades that are easy to miss when you are searching: heating oil and fuel dealers, septic and sewer services, remodeling and general contracting, solar, water treatment, restoration, and specialty trades. Each trade page explains what the work involves, what to ask before you book and what tends to change the price.
How the guides work
- Find your town. Guides are organised by town and trade, so you see businesses that list the area you care about instead of a long regional list.
- Read how each business describes itself. Short summaries come from the business’s own website: the services it names, the areas it says it covers, and details it highlights, such as emergency service, free estimates or financing.
- Compare on the same terms. Where a town has two or more businesses for a trade, a side-by-side comparison lines up their services, who they serve and how to contact them, with our reading of where each stands out.
- Call two or three and ask for the same scope. The questions on each page help you request quotes that can actually be compared.
A directory, not a verdict
The Northeast has plenty of excellent small contractors and plenty of ways to choose badly: a name that came up first, a quote that cannot be compared with the next one, or a business that does not actually cover your street. This guide is built to slow that down a little. It gives you the facts a business shares about itself, in one place, next to its neighbours, and leaves the decision where it belongs.
Listings are not endorsements. We do not verify licences, insurance, prices or quality; confirm them directly before you book.
How we source and correct information →Common questions
What is Town Line Guide?
A directory of local home-service businesses across the Northeast, organised by state, town and trade. Each town page lists the businesses we know about for a trade, with a short summary of what each says on its own website and how to reach it.
Does Town Line Guide rank or recommend businesses?
No. Listings are not rankings or endorsements, and paying never changes who is listed or in what order. In side-by-side comparisons we offer our own reading of what the facts suggest, and we label it as such.
Where do the summaries come from?
From each business’s own website. They describe what the business says it offers, not what we have tested, so treat them as a starting point and confirm the details by phone.
Why is my town short on listings, or missing?
Coverage is growing town by town. If your town has few listings, look at the neighbouring towns: many businesses serve more than one, and each listing shows the area the business says it covers.
How do I get a business added or corrected?
Use the contact on the sources page with the page address, the detail to change and a public source that supports it. Corrections are free.
